Thank you for the beauty

When I received the BBC flash news notification on my iPhone yesterday that Karl Lagerfeld had passed away, all I could think of was to say "thank you" to this fascinating, flamboyant figure who has always been present in my love affair with fashion and style. Of course, I have never been as fortunate as to meet Mr Lagerfeld, but the sense of loss I feel right now is unequivocal. It is the same sense of loss I had felt when the news of David Bowie's demise was announced. It is that sense that not just their particular niche - the music or fashion industry in their case - but the world itself has lost a great one. One may contest that neither of them were important or influential statesmen or involved in some peace keeping mission or something to that effect. But I retort that the world cannot survive on political matter alone - it needs culture, music, art, and fashion, why not? Fashion is a form of art as well and no one quite like Karl Lagerfeld I dare say, has managed to marry these aspects together and present designs which cannot be described other than by the word beautiful. It takes a truly erudite and cultured person to do that. So thank you, Mr Lagerfeld, for all the beauty. Your physical body may have left us but your influence and inspiration is immortal.

Here's some of my favourite quotes by Karl Lagerfeld to remember him by:

"Black-and-white always looks modern, whatever that word means."

"I'm a working-class person, working with class."

"What I enjoy most is doing something I've never done before."

"To think appearances don’t count these days is a lie: it lets you live in harmony with yourself."

"Trendy is the last stage before tacky."

"I've always known that I was made to live this way, that I would be this sort of legend."
